Music composer Beethoven created his symphony number 9 just before his death, in conditions when he had become totally deaf. He adopted poet Schiller's Ode to Joy as the theme for the fourth movement to express his passion and praise to life. Hong Kong local artist LUI Chi-ming and CHAN Wing-sang use mixed media and painting respectively to express their believes in life and to explore the meaning that lies within existence. LUI was born in Hong Kong. He graduated from the University of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology with a BA (Fine Art) degree. LUI had been diagnosed with Nasopharynx cancer in earlier years and because of that, his career path was completely turned around. He started to dedicate to art making and art education as means to express his believes towards life. Through placing his own self portraits into the work, LUI describes his believes in religion and life. Artist CHAN Wing-sang graduated from the Fine Art Department of the Hong Kong Chinese University and attained a BA (Fine Art) degree. In recent time, CHAN has been focusing on 'fabric' as the theme of his paintings. With his works, he probes into the argument of existence. Some unknown forms are hidden underneath the textural lines of white cloth. Through the separation created by the fabric texture, viewers are encouraged to ponder on the content within. The two artists use figurative and abstract forms to discuss the meaning of life and existence. The A·lift Gallery cordially invites you to the exhibition to share the thoughts of the artists.
