YU Wai-luen

Francis YU Wai-luen was born and raised in Hong Kong. He went overseas to study art and received his BFA in visual arts at York University in Toronto. And after that he pursued the study of a MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in London and furthered the study of a PhD in practice and theory of painting at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou.

"I attempt in my works to transform painting into a 'scene', making it coexist with others, like texts, objects and the surrounding vibe, and representing these all as a whole." said Francis in reference to his works.

The combination of images, texts, objects and the ambience interested Francis most; he perceives painting not as a mere thing but an extended scene set up for bringing them together while each claims as much a part to constitute a totality.

Francis Yu attempts to expand the boundaries of painting yet valuing its entity and qualities. Over the last two decades, he has been exploring painting with different series of works. He has taken part in over fifty group exhibitions at local and overseas institutions, and has also exhibited in ten solo exhibitions at different venues in Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Francis Yu teaches painting and drawing and is an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts.
